Dave Devries takes children’s art and colors it realistically, and it is illin’. (Found via Reddit, could not resist posting.)

But it’s too bad I can’t fully scan an 11 x 17 comic page. Because I actually kind of like these, despite the shoddy content. (It was an assignment: 3 page autobiography. So mostly just a simple exercise to work out style kinks, I guess.)

Illustration for the Tufts Observer for articles that are pro- and anti- adderrall. I can’t even spell this freaking drug. This is oddly relevant to my life right now, as I am having a lot of difficulty focusing on my schoolwork and spent around a day wondering if I should start taking adderrall. The answer, by the way, was probz not.

UM HI. I haven’t updated this in too long, as usual. Classes start tomorrow, so I thought I’d write a little bit about what I’ll be working on. I’m taking three art classes this semester:

  • Photography: Foundation: looking forward to overcoming my fear of using my sexy Nikon N50! My high school photography class was a darkroom disaster to say the least. As is so typical of DY, the teacher was kind of learning right along with us. Ended up cheating and developing my final project at CVS instead of in the darkroom. Hoping college is a teeny bit more serious. Maybe I’ll even feel comfortable with my Holga after this!
  • Art as Process: I am really not sure what this consists of, but it’s recommended for people trying to familiarize themselves with SMFA, and since I’m trying to transfer into the dual degree program, it seemed like a good idea to take it.
  • Comic Book Art: Most excited about this one, even though it’s at 9 am on Saturdays and involves an hour long commute. I have some script written for my comic, but I really think this class will get the thing off the ground. The supply list was serious business, inks and everything! Eeeee.

I’ll leave this post with a thingy:

Ada, main comic character, named for the song by the National, and basically a cooler version of myself. Meep. Too much Mad Men means a newfound fascination with cigarettes. Truly afraid that show will convince me to pick up the habit. Or maybe I’ll just draw everyone smoking to get my fix.

CoolHunting posted a cool article today on Julia deVille. Sadly her website isn’t opening on my computer right now, so I can’t get any information outside of said article, but I like her stuff. There’s something mildly disturbing about it, but it’s also beautiful. She is a taxidermist who makes sculptures and jewelry from dead animals (who have died from natural causes).

I think a lot of people would probably find it repulsive to walk around with a dead bird tied around your neck, but something about it is very visually appealing and it feels like a respectful look at death, an homage rather than a mistreatment. I’d probably wear some of the less obviously dead things (that wing is super cute! plus I have a taste for the slightly offbeat), except that I’m sure they’re quite pricey, and I can’t even afford a proper loaf of bread right now!

Shepard Fairey is hot shit right now, to be blunt. I don’t know how to say it without being vulgar. Kids these days!

Vulgarity aside, he’s a very interesting artist. This past spring, he installed a mural on the Tufts campus and controversy ensued (well, kind of) when the mural that should have lasted a couple of years was torn down within a couple of days. This Thursday, Fairey’s crew installed another mural – I wonder how long this one will last? Fairey is pretty surrounded by controversy (the cops love this guy), but love him or hate him (and I can’t say I personally know anyone who hates him), he’s created some iconic images, his best-known being the Barack Obama “Hope” poster:

He’s also responsible for the Obey Giant campaign, which has been known to decorate many a t-shirt or lamppost:

I’m not as politically savvy as I probably could be, so I’ll admit that I’m not completely up on the point that Fairey’s trying to make, but artisitically, I like his work a lot. Bold colors, iconic impactful imagery, and great textures all around.

My mom did a paint by number of that same girl. It's hanging in my grandma's room. Wtf?

I really hope I get to see his work at the Institute of Contemporary Art before it leaves this August. It’s free to go to the ICA on Thursday nights – my schedule has just been so cramped!

Anyway sorry for the AOTW that pretty much everyone already knows (not that anyone’s reading this anyway). I was just thinking about Shepard Fairey is all. I figured I might as well make a post of it!

(As a side note, Fairey and my homie Lawrence Lessig are amigos. They did a lecture together about remix culture – here’s a good summary of it with some videos. Lessig wrote Remix, which is about mash-up culture and why our copyright laws aren’t cutting it in an increasingly digital world, where the concept of a “copy” is totally different from what it used to be. There’s also a free documentary on the topic available online. I never finished the whole thing because I’m no good at watching whole documentaries, plus it was a bit redundant having read the book, but seeing as it’s free, check it out!)
